Gabala FK continues dominating Azerbaijani football after recording its fifth victory of the league season from their opening six games.
The 2016-2017 Europa League participants moved on top of the Azerbaijan Premier League table with 16 points, following a hard fought 2-0 defeat away at Zira.
It was another splendid performance from Liberian midfielder Theo Weeks, whose two goals in each half helped to secure a win for the Gabala City-based club.
He opened the scoring for his side in the 19th minute with a left-foot shot from within Zira’s penalty area before getting his second of the match in the 76th minute.
Weeks has enjoyed a glittering start to his Gabala career and vowed to work harder to help Gabala keep winning.
“I’m glad to get on the score sheet but it wasn’t my primary objective,†Weeks said after the match. “I came to help the club play well in the league and the Europa League, and I feel happy it is going on well. I will keep working harder to help the team so as to prove my worth.â€
Gabala will play its second Europa League group game against German Bundesliga club, Mainz 05, at home without Weeks, who is serving his two-game suspension from the red card he received in Gabala’s last game of the qualifier.
They lost their first of the group stage 3-1 match away at Anderlecht, and Weeks has backed his side to bounce back with a win despite his absence.
“We play as a team and not individuals,†Weeks told The Bush Chicken. “We lost our first match, but there are more games to go. We have Mainz at home, and we will start from there. I’m not playing, but I’m confident of my team getting a win. We have trained and work harder, and we are more focus ahead of the match.â€
