County Meet Postponed for Fifth Time

MONROVIA, Montserrado – The 2017-18 edition of National County Sports Meet appears to be losing its momentum after the organizer of the event, the Ministry of Youth and Sports, announced the postponement of the tournament for the fifth time.

The original kickoff date was December 2, which was later moved to December 9, and then to the 16th. Assistant Youth and Sports Minister Henry B. Yonton had told The Bush Chicken that the tournament was being postponed because the Superintendent Council complained that the US$8,000 per county given for preparations was insufficient. After he said the matter was addressed, the tournament was set for December 30. Then, the December 30 date passed without the tournament being played and January 10 was set as the new date for the kickoff.

However, the kickoff has now been pushed to an unknown date, after the inauguration of President-elect George Manneh Weah.

Yonton confirmed the postponement of the tournament, but did not give any specific reason. He told The Bush Chicken that the reason was beyond his control.

“It has been postponed but I don’t know the real reason. The instructions came from somewhere else, which I cannot disclose,” he told The Bush Chicken.

The tournament usually begins December each year and ends in January, but the 2017-18 edition has turned out to be filled with uncertainties.
