After Ebola, NGO Resumes Mission to Provide Free Surgeries

HARBEL, Margibi – A US-based nonprofit has resumed its mission of providing free surgical operations in Liberia, after being disrupted by the Ebola outbreak.

Children Surgery International is expected to commence another mission to Liberia on January 12, 2017. All of its activities will be carried out at the Firestone Duside Hospital free of charge.

The organization performs craniofacial surgeries such as cleft lip and palate, urological procedures, and general pediatric surgeries.

In addition to the operations performed, the team of volunteers also works closely with local healthcare workers to provide surgical, nursing, and general medical training.

Already, the free registration of children has begun at the Duside Hospital in Harbel.

In 2008, Children Surgery International embarked on its first Liberian mission at Phebe Hospital in Bong. By 2010, the organization had begun a close partnership with Firestone to provide free medical surgery at the company’s hospital.

Between 2010 and 2013, CSI conducted five one-week-long surgical missions at Duside.

Over the years, about 123 medical volunteers have screened more than 1,000 patients and performed surgery on 568 children.
