Federation of Liberian Youth Weighs in On Crisis at Legislature

MONROVIA, Montserrado – The National Executive council of the Federation of Liberian Youth has described the ongoing tumult between some lawmakers at the lower house as an obstacle to the development of Liberia.

Speaking on Tuesday, FLY’s President Augustine Tamba said the conflict between the lawmakers is hindering the country’s progress.

A majority of lawmakers at the House of Representatives have called on Speaker Alex Tyler to resign from the speakership amid corruption charges he faces related to the recent Global Witness report.

The lawmakers have been holding separate sessions led by Deputy Speaker Hans Barchue, causing confusion about which session is legitimate.

Tamba said the crisis within the House of Representatives is causing delays to some major projects that may impact the youth.

“Because of the hullabaloo between them, the budget hasn’t been discussed,” Tamba said. “The young people [have also] been victimized by this shameful and disgraceful power play.”

Tamba appeared to side with Tyler as he called on those who are calling for the resignation of the indicted speaker to do so with the boundaries of the law.

He called on anti-Tyler lawmakers to return to the chamber and do the business of the Liberia people.

Tamba further added that while it is true FLY does not support any form of corruption, the body believes those accused of corruption should be dealt with according to the law.

He also cautioned the youth to avoid being fooled by politicians seeking their own interests.
