George Weah Congratulates William Jebor on Winning Moroccan League

MONROVIA, Montserrado – After William Jebor led his Wydad Casablanca to win the 2016-2017 Morocco Botola Pro League title with two games to spare, Liberian football legend George Weah has extended his congratulations to the striker.

Jebor and his team finished week 28 and completed the feat when the Casablanca-based club won 2-1 away at Olympique de Safi to extend their lead at the top of the table with 63 points from 28 games, seven points above second place team, Difaa El Jadidi.

Goals from Jebor and Moroccan midfielder Salaheddine Saidi in the 34th and 51st minutes, respectively, were enough to hand Wydad a win away at Olympique de Safi, whose lone goal came through Mehdi Namli from the penalty spot in the 21st minute.

The goal was Jebor’s 19th of the league season from 18 games, while Wydad has now won its 19th league title.

Weah had recommended Jebor to Wydad after his previous team, Ponferradina, was relegated to play in the third tier of Spanish football. At the same time, Wydad was in search of a striker before the end of the summer transfer window.

Since joining the club, Jebor has set himself as a key figure in the squad, playing a major role in helping them win the league.

The goal scored against Olympique de Safi extended Jebor’s tally at the top of the goal scoring log with 19, seven more than Mohammed el Fakih, who placed second with 12 goals. With two games to play and Jebor’s current goal scoring form, he is the clear favorite to win the league’s golden boots.

His performance caught the attention of Weah, the former FIFA World Player of the year, who congratulated Jebor for his achievements with the Moroccan club.

Weah, who is arguably the greatest African player of all time and a former AC Milan, Paris Saint-Germain, and Chelsea forward, became one of few prominent Liberians around the world to congratulate Jebor for his achievements with the Moroccan club.

Through Facebook, Weah expressed his joy for the Jebor’s achievement in the Moroccan league. He further thanked Wydad’s president, Said Naciri, for accepting Jebor into the club.

“I would like to congratulate Liberian soccer star William Jebor and the Wydad Cassablanca Soccer club for winning the Moroccan national championship,” Weah wrote. “I am very proud of Jebor for not only helping his club win the championship but for being the highest goal scorer as well. Jebor has shown what it takes to be focused and resilient, a great characteristic of a true champion. His accomplishment is a true testament that with the help of God, hard work and determination, one can achieve whatever they put their mind to, but most of all, overcome the immense challenges we are faced with in life.”

Weah said Jebor’s performance had “brought pride to all Liberians.”
