Government Announces Full Restoration of Health Services

MONROVIA, Montserrado – Assistant Health Minister for Curative Services, Dr. Saye Dahn Barwo, announced on Tuesday that the government has fully resumed essential health services in the country.

The announcement comes 30 days after Liberia’s last Ebola case. The Ebola outbreak overwhelmed the health care delivery system leaving more than 4,000 Liberians dead, including many health workers.

“Since last September, the Ministry of Health under the leadership of the Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Bernice Dahn along with her able lieutenants, have been working assiduously to ensure the restoration of essential health services in our country,” Barwo stated.

“I am pleased to announce that all major government health facilities in this country have reopened and many other private facilities are also opened. There are a few private facilities not functioning because some of the proprietors need additional time to renovate before they can continue to provide care,” he added.

Among the re-opened hospitals, Barwo mentioned Redemption Hospital, JFK and James N. Davies.

Barwo said that the government has opened the Maternity and Pediatric wards of JFK and Redemption Hospitals, while the JFK has also reopened its wards for admission of medical, pediatric, obstetric and surgical cases.

Additionally, Barwo said that with the support of the World Bank, the government plans to build permanent structures in all health facilities including hospitals and other healthcare centers. The structures will be used to hold suspected Ebola patients.
