Lightning Strikes Radio Saclepea in Storm Disaster

GANTA, Nimba – Radio Saclepea, a community radio station based in Saclepea, has seen many of its equipment damaged after being struck by lightning.

The incident occurred at about 3:25 p.m. on Wednesday. Speaking via mobile phone, Victor Zuageglee, a reporter at Radio Saclepea, explained the incident to the Voice of Gompa radio station in Ganta.

He said that while they were carrying out their routine activities, it began to rain heavily. As the rainfall raged on, a bolt of lightning struck the station and destroyed a lot of their equipment.

“Among the equipment that were destroyed are the studio mixer, the relay machine, [and the] computer,” he said.

Zuageglee added that the Saclepea Comprehensive Health Center also experienced similar destructions.

Radio Saclepea is a member of the Nimba County Community Radio Association, which is supported by members of the community. The radio station is now calling on non-governmental organizations and other well-meaning people of the county to help the station regain its status.

The incident is not the first of its kind in the county. In February 2009, a local community radio station in Ganta, Radio Kergheamahn, was damaged by a similar strike which forced the station to go off the air for more than three months.
