Nimba Held to a 2-2 Draw by Montserrado

SANNIQUELLIE, Nimba – Daniel Tuazamah put smiles on frustrated Nimbaian faces in the 95th minute of Sunday’s game against Montserrado at the Sanniquellie Sports Field.

It was the second football match of Group B in the National County Sports Meet kickoff.

Montserrado took hold of the game just six minutes into the first half from a converted corner kick, before a 25th-minute spot-kick by Mark Yarleh brought the hosts back into the game.

A chance at taking the lead came in the 41st minute for Nimba, when Yarleh narrowly missed a free-kick taken from deep inside Montserrado’s half.

For the remainder half of the game, it was an intensive back-to-back attack from both teams, who were desperately in need of a win at the jam-packed sports field.

In the 81st minute of the match, pressure from Montserrado caused Nimba defender Nicholas Swan to get the visitors ahead for the second time, with an own goal.

As supporters of Montserrado were celebrating a possible victory with nine minutes left in the match, the introduction of Daniel Tuazamah changed the momentum of the game in favor of Nimba.

Coming in as a substitute for striker Nyan Dahn, Tuazamah equalized for Nimba in the 95th minute.

After the match, Nimba head coach Muta Fofana said, “The result here today is very much encouraging, and this result will make the team to do more preparations for the two opponents remaining. We are asking our people not to be deterred with the result. We can assure them that we will do all of our best to give them the victory they need in the remaining fixtures.”

In the kickball category of Group B fixtures, Sinoe defeated River Cess 8-1 while Nimba defeated Montserrado 6-1.
