Weekend Review: Sam Johnson’s DjurgÃ¥rdens Starts Winning Again

Ahead of this week’s FIFA 2018 World Cup qualifiers, domestic leagues were finishing up play before the break in a weekend that was disastrous for Liberians playing away as they saw more defeats than wins.

Sweden-based striker Sam Johnson, of Allsvenskan club Djurgårdens, got back to winning on Sunday night after an easy 3-0 win away at Kalmar. This came after the team experienced three straight losses.

The Liberian machine man opened up the scoring for Djurgårdens in the 30th minute before Kerim Mrabti and Jesper Karlström added the second and third goals in the 52nd and 90th minutes.

The goal was Johnson’s 8th league goal after 26 appearances. His tally has made him the second leading goal scorer this season for Djurgårdens, with four goals behind the Zimbabwean striker Nyasha Myshetwi, who has 12 goals to his name.

Djurgårdens’ three points obtained against Kalmar keeps the team in the 6th spot, with 44 points from 27 matches.

Still in the Swedish Allsvenskan, the premier football league, veteran striker Dioh Williams played all 90 minutes but failed to score as his club Gefle IF suffered a 2-1 lost away at GIF Sundsvall. The defeat drops Gefle to 9th place on the league table with 32 points from 27 games.

For the Spanish-based William Jebor, it was also a disappointing weekend. Jebor played 78 minutes but could not stop his Ponferradina from going down 1-0 to Numencia. The defeat dropped Ponferradina to 10th on Spain second tier league table with nine points from seven games.

Holland-based Seku Conneh returned to scoring on Friday night as his club FC Oss got an easy 4-0 victory over visitors Fortuna Sittard. The goal was Conneh’s second goal this season from eight league appearances. The victory elevated struggling FC Oss to the 16th place on the league table with seven points.

Controversial midfielder Dulee Johnson continues to enjoy success with FK Moss in Norway’s second division league as he registered his name on the scoresheet on Sunday night after and helped Moss to an easy 8-1 win over Drammen. The goal was Johnson’s fourth goal from five appearances since joining the club in the summer. Moss remains second on the league table with 51 points.

In Cyprus, right back Solomon Grimes continues to struggle to get off the bench as he managed to play just the last ten minutes to help his club earn just a point at home with visitors Paphos. Nea Salamis now sits 5th on the league table with 10 points from 6 games.

Still in Cyprus, box-to-box midfielder Theo Weeks Lewis suffered an early injury and was substituted just eight minutes into the first half as his club Ermis got a hard fought 2-2 draw away at Ethnikos Achna. Ermis’ poor start to the new league season has seen them seated 12th with five points on a 14 team log.

Anthony Laffor’s Mamelodi Sundowns advanced to the quarterfinals of the South African League Cup after a 2-0 win over Chippa United.

In Malaysia, Zah Krangar’s Felda United suffered their first defeat in the 2015 Malaysia Cup as they went down 2-1 away at T-Team. The loss dropped Felda to third place in Group C with five points.
