MONROVIA, Montserrado – The Monrovia City Court has placed a travel ban on 35 individuals it described as persons of interest in the ongoing investigation for the alleged disappearance of billions of dollars in newly printed Liberian banknotes from the Central Bank of Liberia.
The individuals include Central Bank’s former executive governor, Milton Weeks, and Charles Sirleaf, the son of former president Ellen Johnson Sirleaf who serves as deputy governor for operations. The list includes numerous other officials of the Central Bank.
The order is an extension of a previous notice issued identifying several persons of interest, including Weeks and Sirleaf in the ongoing investigation. The national security circular also advised the individuals to not leave the country.
According to a writ issued by the court dated September 26, the government claims that the concerned individuals were about to leave the country amid the ongoing investigation. The writ prevents the individuals from traveling outside the country.
It followed an application by the government through its attorney general, Justice Minister Musa Dean.
The court, meanwhile, ordered the defendants to file a legal bond or they would face punishment by a jail sentence.
