MONROVIA, Montserrado – The secretary general of the Liberia Council of Churches has said the organization will not participate in the presidential investigative team set up to probe into the alleged missing billions of Liberian dollars.
Rev. Christopher Toe said church leaders agreed on Sunday, September 23 to play a neutral and impartial role to ensure that the country’s hard-earned peace is sustained.
The Liberia Council of Churches has also clarified that they were not consulted by the government of Liberia through the Ministry of Justice before being named as a member of the investigative team.
On September 19, 2018, the Ministry of Justice named several organizations to the team set to investigate the scandal.
Toe said they were taken aback when they saw their name in a press statement issued by the Ministry of Justice.
“After we saw our name on the press release, it was when we engaged them,†he noted.
Moreover, Toe noted that instead of being asked to investigate the reportedly missing billions, the organization was asked specifically to form part of an investigation to examine “circumstances surrounding the printing of Liberian banknotes and the importation of both United States and Liberian bank notes by the Central Bank of Liberia into the country.â€
However, he thanked Pres. George Weah for constituting the investigative team and encouraged the president to regularly inform the public about the team’s progress.
Toe commended the action taken by the government during the September 24 protest. He praised the high level of discipline and police protection provided to the protesters on the day of the march. He called on the government to continue to respect the rule of law and human dignity.
