GREENVILLE, Sinoe – The president of the Sinoe University Students Union, Isaac Sneh, has called on the county to prioritize education and provide greater support for scholarships and financial assistance to Sinoe students. Fresh support to the county, he said, is the only means of promoting quality education.
Sneh made these comments when he spoke on a local radio talk show in the county on Monday, March 9. When speaking about support for education to colleges in the county, Sneh identified limited budget resources as the main constraint undermining students’ enrolment at various universities and colleges across the country.
“We want to use this medium to call on our people across the county and even those in the diaspora to help in the area of scholarship provision because we the young people are the ones who will shoulder the responsibilities of our county and Liberia in the near future,†he said.
Over the years, a number of prominent figures from the county have donated resources to the university, including Sen. Augustine Chea, and Emmanuel Gbalee, the administrative assistant in the office of the minister of public works, in addition to allocations made in the Sinoe County Development Fund.
During the 12th Sitting of the County’s Development Fund in Greenville, US$10,000 was allocated to support learning at the university. But out of that amount, only US$5,000 was made available to the university, and was spent on 93 students in five universities and colleges in the country where Sinoe students are enrolled, Sneh told to The Bush Chicken.
He expressed appreciation for the money provided but alarmed that with over 300 Sinoe students attending universities and colleges across the county, far more resources will be needed to educate the county’s youths. The managers of the County’s Development Fund, he demanded, must provide greater support to students during the 13th Sitting of the County Fund which was scheduled for March 15.
It is unclear how much new resources have been allocated to scholarships and financial assistance during the 13th Sitting. But far more than US$10,000 would be needed to materially transform the educational situation of Sinoe students across the county.
