Solomon Grimes of Cyprus division one club Nea Salamis says Lonestar must beat Djibouti today to revive its hopes of reaching the finals of the African Cup of Nations competition.
Grimes says Liberia still has a chance to take command of Group A despite only claiming three points from their last two matches.
Speaking to The Bush Chicken after joining the Lonestar camp in Djibouti, he said Liberia can still make it to the final with good results from the remaining matches.
“We still have a good chance and to make it work, we must start by winning on Thursday. A win here will give us the confidence ahead of the return leg and remaining matches in the Group,†he said.
A total of 15 teams will qualify to play in the tournament’s finals, joining host Gabon. Liberia finds itself second in Group A with three points, level on points with third place Tunisia.
Togo sits on top of the log with 4 points. The “Sparrow Hawks” defeated Liberia 2-1 in their opening match before grabbing a 2-0 victory away at Djibouti.
Djibouti and Liberia will play two legs in a period of five days. Thursday’s match will be played at 10,000 seater Stade du Ville in Djibouti on March 24, with the return leg scheduled for five days later at Antoinette Tubman Stadium.
