NEKREEN TOWNSHIP, Grand Bassa – Grand Bassa’s Senator Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence has launched a groundbreaking ceremony for the Bassa Sports Academy, located in Nekreen Statutory District.

According to Karnga-Lawrence, the academy, which was funded by the Legislative Support Project initiative by the legislature, will contain a football pitch, a basketball court, and a dormitory for athletes.

The Legislative Support Project allows lawmakers in both the Senate and House to appropriate funds for projects of their choice to benefit their respective constituents.

At the ceremony, Karnga-Lawrence said the large-scale unemployment and idleness causes young people to frequently insult their leaders, suggesting that the academy was meant to provide the youth with alternatives.

“I have said this over and again that the reason why the young people continue to insult their leaders is because, they have nothing to do,” she said. “For me, I have promised not get vex with them. I will empower them through my development.”

Citizens of Nekreen Township appeared to welcome the development in their community as they celebrated and thanked Karnga-Lawrence.

Several other lawmakers from Grand Bassa and Monsterrado also attended the ceremony including Montserrado’s Sen. Geraldine Doe-Sheriff, who broke the ground.

Doe-Sheriff contributed L$175,000 (US$1,768) to the project and extended her appreciation to her Karnga-Lawrence for launching the project. She said the project would boost the chances of young people who wanted to pursue their dreams in sports.
