Liberian defender Adolphus Nagbe Marshall’s debut season in Europe continues to be a memorable one, as he has been nominated for the 2017-18 Malta Second Division Player of the Year Award.
Marshall, who plays for Gudja United, was nominated for the best player of the year award just less than two weeks after his team was crowned champions of the 2017-18 Malta Second Division League and gained promotion to the first division.
He was nominated along with 24-year-old Maltese midfielder, Roderick Taliana, who plays for Swieqi United and 24-year-old Colombian defender, Sebastiano Perdomo, who plays for Santa Lucia.
The defender, who is currently on vacation in Liberia, played a major role in helping his club gain promotion to the Maltese First Division league. Players nominated for the award generally tend to be forwards and midfielders, but Marshall has managed to make his way in the top three due to his outstanding performances during the season.
His hard work in defense helped the club concede few goals; he also scored three important goals to help Gudja clinch the league’s title.
The center-defender who also plays at left-back was full of praises for his teammates and coaching staff after being nominated for the top award.
He told The Bush Chicken that it was due to the hard work of the coaching staff and his teammates that he was able to play well during the season.
“As any footballer, I am excited to be nominated for such award. I hope to win it,†he said. “God first, but my coaching staff and teammates helped me settle in. It was just my first year in European football and I have managed to reach this stage. It’s only the tireless efforts from my teammates and coaching staffs that help me through.â€
Marshall ended his seven years of playing his professional football career in Indonesia when he joined Gudja during the 2017 summer transfer window as a free agent. He joined the club on a one-year deal with the option of extension at the end of the season which he has extended up to 2020.
