BAHN, Nimba – Health authorities in Bahn on Saturday, October 8 dedicated an eight-bedroom maternity center at the Bahn Health Center in Zoe Geh Statutory District.
The dedication came following the resolution of a recent conflict between the Bahn Health Center’s administrator, Arthur Gayepue, and a local youth group over the naming of the maternity center.
The youth had been protesting what they said was Gayepue’s decision to name the maternity center without consultation from the community.
According to Angie Dopoe, Bahn’s mayor, Gayepue and other health authorities of the Bahn Health Centre agreed to name the newly constructed maternity centre after the late Rev. David K. Dunah of Bahn, Nimba County.
Dopoe, who addressed reporters last Thursday about the conflict, said both parties resolved that the building is named after Dunah because the reverend had contributed immensely to the growth and development of Bahn. The late Dunah is the father of Rep. Worleah Saywah Dunah of Nimba’s seventh electoral district.
The Bahn mayor said Gayepue later apologized to the youth group for the confusion between him and the group.
The maternity center, which contains two bathrooms and a labor ward, cost approximately US$45,000 and was paid for by the central government.
Dopoe said the center will help enhance the works of health practitioners and address the health needs of the citizens.
In an interview with reporters in Bahn over the weekend, Gayepue said the facility was erected with subsidies from the central government to ease some of the health challenges faced by citizens and health practitioners in the area.
Gayepue told journalists that the maternity centre was built with the help of citizens, the city administration, elders, and huge moral support from the district’s representative, Dunah.
He also disclosed that the Bahn Health Center receives a L$100,000 (US$1,010) annual subsidy from the government.
‘The facility will start functioning effectively when the ministry of Health and social welfare and its partners provide the requisite materials,†he added.
Gayepue thanked district health officer Abraham Karkpoe, health workers of the Bahn Health Center, the construction engineers, and many others who were instrumental in constructing the maternity centre in Bahn.
He promised to continue working in the interest of citizens in his capacity as administrator to improving the facility.
