MONROVIA, Montserrado – As teams prepare for the 2015 National County Sports Meet that is expected to start on Dec. 2, Monsterrado has appointed Amos Smith as the head coach of its football team.
In an interview after his appointment, Smith expressed his gratitude for the appointment. He said he hoped his past coaching experience would help Monsterrado to achieve glory this year.
“I’m happy that the people of Monsterrado trusted me with the job and gave me the opportunity to lead the team,” Smith said. “It’s not an easy task to compete in the county meet. I consider it as the best football competition within the country. The fans, the momentum, [it’s very] exciting.”
On the challenges ahead, Smith said, “It’s my first time serving as a coach of a county team and my first county meet experience. Every good coach would love to win. With God, I’m firstly hoping that we make the Group stage and then focus on clinching the trophy which would be a massive achievement.”
Prior to his appointment as Monsterrado’s head coach, Smith served as the player-coach for the Monrovia Black Star FC from 2000 to 2006. He was subsequently appointed to head coach of Black Star FC until 2009.
With Black Star, he won the Cellcom National League, the Liberian Football Association Cup, and the President’s Cup. Prior to the appointment, he served as the head coach for the third division side Swankamore FC.
Smith holds a Confederation of African Football License AÂ badge, the highest coaching certification under the CAF licensing system.
Monsterrado is in Group D, along with county meet giant Margibi County and the underrated Gbarpolu County.
