MONROVIA, Montserrado – The 2016 ELWA Sub-committee football league, has come to an end, with Reeves Football Club emerging as champions in a 30-team competition.
Reeves clinched the championship after a hard fought 1-0 win over Zubah Town United Football Club on August 14 at the Alpha Old-timer sports pitch located in the Zubah Town community.
A lone goal from striker Samuel Tetteh in the 78th minute was enough to hand Reeves its first major league title.
With Zubah Town playing on home soil, they had the support of most of the fans in the stadium. They started the match as the better side with entertaining ball passing and held much of the possession in the opening minutes.
They looked stronger in almost every area, with greater peaks of talent and increased thrust in their attacking play. However, they failed to produce an early goal. Reeves gradually got themselves together and played to end the first half goalless.
Although Reeves returned from the break with some attacking threats that were ruthless in front of goal, their star striker, Samuel Tetteh squandered several golden opportunities.
Fans had to wait until the 78th minute to see a goal in the match after Samuel Tetteh capitalized on a mistake by Zubah Town’s defense to put Reeves FC in the lead.
The goal slowed down the attacking pressure of Zubah Town, and Reeves took total control of the remaining minutes of the match. A chance to double their lead in the 85th minute was squandered by Tetteh whose shot hit the crossbar.
Reeves held on to their lead and prevented a frustrated Zubah Town from scoring. They ended the match as winners of their first ever trophy.
Reeves’ head coach, Emmanuel Kehkeh, had a lot of praise for his team as he named them the best generation in the club’s history.
“I’m so proud,” he said. “The players have been fantastic. Their focus, their determination, their spirit has made it possible. It is an amazing feeling, and I’m so happy for everyone.”
Reeves will now represent the ELWA Sub-committee in the upcoming third division playoffs, and  Kehkeh believes winning the championship is a great motivation for their task ahead.
“We have just started, and this is not the end. We have playoffs games coming up soon. Winning the championship is just a motivation to the entire team. Now we will have to work harder to get the better result in the playoffs. We will not sit back and feel complacent. We will resume training this week to start early preparations,†Kehkeh said.
