Sam Johnson’s pending move to the Scottish Premiership giant, Celtics Football Club, appears to be waning after the Celtics signed another striker.
Earlier in June, Johnson’s Swedish club Djurgardens IF confirmed reports that the Celtics had an interest in the Liberian striker, who’s in contract with Djurgardens until 2018.
The new Celtics manager, Brendan Rogers, was in search of a new center forward. At 23, Johnson was young enough to fill the place of players on the Celtics’ team who were in danger of being replaced.
He has scored seven goals in 12 Allsvenskan appearances this season, three short of his 2015 tally, when he registered 17 strikes in 54 outings for then third tier club, IK Frej.
However, Johnson’s move to the 47-time Scottish League Champions has been hit with a major blow after the Glasgow-based club confirmed the signing of 19-year old French striker, Moussa Dembele from the English Championship club, Fulham Football Club.
The Dembele move to Celtics appears to put a halt to Sam Johnson’s Celtic move.
Weah Harris, a Liberian journalist based in Sweden, said in an interview that the news was not necessarily bad for Johnson.
“You know this is the transfer season,†he said. “It’s football, and it’s obvious. Clubs show interest and don’t buy. It happens all around the world. But it’s not anything to worry about. There are bigger things coming up for Sam. But for now, he’s with Djurgardens and is focusing on his career here. I don’t think he’s in rush. He will move on at the appropriate time.â€
Johnson is currently on a break with his club Djurgadens that is expected to resume league play on July 9 at home against IFK Norrkoping. Djurgardens is currently sitting 10th on the Allsvenskan table with 15 points from ten matches. They are 12 points behind league leaders Malmo FF and just two points above relegation zone.
