MONROVIA, Montserrado – The lawyers of Senator Varney Sherman risk incarceration in the ongoing bribery case regarding the Global Witness Report. The Monrovia City Court has requested that they produce computers related to the case or face imprisonment.
The lawyers in question are G. Moses Paegar, Ceril Jones, Albert Sims, Golda Elliott and F. Musa Dean.
The Magistrate of the Monrovia City Court, J. Kennedy Peabody, has also found the five lawyers guilty of contempt because they disrespected the court by obstructing justice at the Sherman’s home and offices.
Peabody maintained that the defendants are also to pay L$10,000 (US$111) each. He did not attach any timeline to the payment of the fine by the defendants.
Peabody indicated that the computers and other items requested by the court in the search and seizure warrant must be brought immediately to the court by the accused.
Peabody defined contempt of court as disregard or disobedience of the court by conduct which tends to disobey the administration of justice.
Sherman’s lawyers’ contempt of court charge came about after they obstructed the court’s sheriff from carrying out a search and seizure arrest warrant on Monday, May 23, 2016, at the home and offices of the accused.
