MONROVIA, Montserrado – A police officer have been reportedly attacked by private guards assigned to Benoni Urey, the standard bearer of the All Liberian Party, during a campaign event.
Roosevelt Demey Kidau, the Liberia National Police officer, was reportedly attacked at the Duport Road Junction in Paynesville.
Sam Collins, the police spokesperson, said Kidau had gone to stop motorcyclists in Urey’s convoy from riding along the main streets, as is prohibited by restrictions instituted by the police. However, he was overpowered by the guards.
Collins said Kidau was attacked in the clear view of Urey and that “the officer is currently undergoing medical treatment at an undisclosed location.â€
Collins condemned the incident, saying, “No police officer should be overlooked because of any individual’s connection in society.â€
He stressed that the political campaign season should not be about fighting or being arrogant.
“Political parties should exhibit maturity to be able to convince a large group of people in society through their political platform,†Collins said.
“Politicians and their followers should come to these elections with a high level of responsibility and tolerance.â€
The ALP has confirmed the incident and said it would respond to the media on the matter shortly.
