Weah Leading in Preliminary Results in Nimba’s First District

GANTA, Nimba – Data collected from tally sheets posted by polling staff of the National Elections Commission at 11 polling precincts in Nimba’s first district puts Sen. George Manneh Weah of the Coalition for Democratic Change in the lead with 7,010 votes, compared to 5,085 votes for Vice President Joseph N. Boakai of the Unity Party.

The collected data represents 75 percent of a total of 78 polling places in the district. The voting precincts included in the results are Geolanda Community High School, Josephine Diagor Kindergarten and Elementary School, Liberty Christian Institute, Messiah Christian Academy, Gbatu Quarter Palaver Hut, Foundation Academy School, YMCA High School, Zokerseh Public School, John Wesley Pearson High School, and Small Ganta Community Palaver Hut.

On December 26, Liberians went to the poll to choose between Boakai and Weah for a successor to President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, who has few weeks to complete a two-term rule. Voting in the runoff election between the two candidates came to a close at 6:00 p.m. yesterday across Liberia.

Meanwhile, dozens of CDC supporters have already been celebrating on the main streets of Ganta as preliminary results continue to be announced by the media from different parts of the country. It appears clear that CDC will take the lead, although the National Elections Commission has not yet started announcing official results.
