MONROVIA, Montserrado – George Weah, the standard bearer of the Coalition for Democratic Change, has warned that Liberia’s stability now depends on the Supreme Court’s ruling in the alleged elections fraud during the October 10 election.
Weah’s statement comes in the wake of a writ of prohibition filed by the opposition Liberty Party to halt the November 7 runoff election.
Liberty Party has alleged significant fraud in the October 10 polls and is calling for a re-run of the process. The ruling Unity Party, in addition to the All Liberian Party, announced their solidarity with Liberty Party’s legal quest.
Addressing journalists on Monday at the Capitol Building, Weah said the Supreme Court and Liberia’s international partners should pay keen attention to the electoral process and ensure that the will of the majority prevails.
“We would like to say that the peace and stability of Liberia lies in the hands of the Supreme Court,†he said.
The CDC standard bearer also indicated that the Liberian people are watching, adding that “the voice of the people is the voice of God and the will of the people must be respected.â€
Weah said despite being convinced that both the 2005 and 2011 elections won by the Unity Party were not credible, he allowed peace and stability to supersede his quest for state power because of his love of Liberia.
He also cautioned CDC partisans to not be distracted by those calling for a re-run, pointing out that “those complaining are also campaigning for the re-run election on November 7.â€
While Unity Party has said it supports Liberty Party’s position to contest the first round of elections, the party has not pulled out of the second round.
Weah called on his supporters to remain peaceful during the campaign period. He also called on the Liberia National Police to provide protection for his supporters as they campaign for the runoff election.
