The Lone Star of Liberia has advanced to the second round of the 2018 Russia FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign after an impressive 3-1 victory away at Guinea-Bissau.
After a disappointing 1-1 draw in the first leg at the Antoinette Tubman Stadium, and with controversial striker Francis Doe dropped from the team, Jebor took the initiative by scoring a hat-trick. Jebor is the first Liberian to score a hat-trick in recent memory.
His efforts helped Liberia to a 4-2 aggregate over fellow West Africans Guinea-Bissau.
Jebor gave Liberia an early lead in the 8th minute before getting his second of the match four minutes later. But the home side pulled one back two minutes before the end of the first half through Ibraima Cassama, making the score 2-1.
The second half started with a lot of fireworks from both sides, but Guinea-Bissau was unable to level the score until Jebor added Liberia’s third goal during the stoppage time of the match.
With a 3-1 victory away at Guinea-Bissau, Jebor broke the deadlock as the Lone Star of Liberia got her first competitive away win in 14 years and 89 days.
Liberia’s last win was on July 14, 2001, against Sierra Leone at the Siaka Stephens Sports Stadium in Freetown. In that game, the Lone Star defeated the Leone Stars of Sierra Leone 1-0, courtesy of a George Weah header from a corner.
Liberia will now play African champions Cote D’ Ivoire in a two-leg qualifier in November. A victory over the Elephants will give Liberia a place in the group stage of the qualifiers.
