Brumskine Says Liberty Party Supports Neither UP or CDC

CONGO TOWN, Montserrado – Charles Walker Brumskine, standard bearer of the Liberty Party, says his party neither supports the Unity Party nor the Coalition for Democratic Change in the presidential runoff election slated for December 26.

Addressing a press conference on Monday at the party’s headquarters at Catholic Hospital Junction, Brumskine said the decision came after partisans concluded their promised broad-based consultations to determine which one of the two parties to endorse in the runoff election.

“It is the decision of the Liberty Party as an institution, we will endorse neither Boakai nor Weah in the runoff election,” Brumskine maintained.

He said during consultations with partisans, it was revealed that their choices fell within four categories that included, remaining neutral, endorsing either of the two parties, and lastly, seeking guidance from the party’s political leader.

Brumskine noted that his party’s membership is diverse, with different interests and motivation.

“The interest of some partisans is national while other are personal,” he said.

“Some of our partisans are less patient while others are willing to go along with our decision even if such decision would subordinate their short-term personal interest to the greater good of all,” he said, likely referencing the recent controversial endorsement of CDC made by three of the party’s leaders.

Brumskine stated that the right to vote is a fundamental right of every Liberian, stressing that Liberty Party “holds strongly that the right to vote is sacrosanct and should not be denied, controlled, restricted or diluted.”

He indicated that the party respects the rights of all members and supporters to endorse or not to endorse any party in the runoff election, pointing out that “whosoever some of our partisans have chosen to endorse or whoever others might choose to endorse or even if some of our partisans decide not to endorse, none become any less partisan than the other.”
