The Maltese second division club Gudja United, the home of Liberian Adolphus Marshall, has kept alive its hope of moving to the first division at the end of the current campaign after collecting its ninth win of the 2017-18 league season.
The latest positive sign for Gudja United was a comfortable 3-0 win over bottom dwellers, Gharghur Football Club. Goals from Marshall, Anthony Ewurum, and Joseph Chetcuti ensured that Gudja returned home with all three points.
Gudja was unable to break through the stubborn Gharghur defense in the first half as they went to the break with a goalless draw. However, in the second half, Marshall put Gudja ahead in the 47th minute and the Maltese winger Anthony Ewurum doubled the lead two minutes after the opener.
Gudja defended their two goals lead until the 91st minute when the 35-year-old Maltese winger, Joseph Chetcuti, scored to add Gudja’s third goal of the match.
The victory took Gudja from third to first on the table with 33 points from 17 games. They are leveled on points with Fgura United Football Club and Swieqi United Football Club, respectively in second and third place. However, Gudja has a game left.
Despite the slight lead, Marshall has called on his teammates to remain focused. He told The Bush Chicken that it is the time to work harder and not to feel relaxed.
“It’s really a good thing for us at the moment to be seated at the top of the league. It is where we want to be, but it is when we need to work harder then ever before,†he said. “Our aim is to qualify, and we must work towards it. It’s not an easy thing to do but we are prepared. Now, the entire team needs to remain very focus. At this point, we have a lot to do. Hence, we should get prepared to work harder.â€
Gudja United will be hoping to collect another three points over the weekend when they play against fourth placed Santa Lucia Football Club at home.
