MONROVIA, Montserrado – The much talked about West Africa Football Union club competition, sponsored by American broadcaster Fox Sports, has come to an end with Liberia’s Barrack Young Controllers returning home empty handed.
The team arrived on Tuesday, April 4 via Roberts International Airport to prepare for their weekend CAF Confederation Cup fixtures against South African ABSA Premiership club, Supersports United.
The Go Blue Boys departed the country last Wednesday for Senegal where the competition was played between Cote d’Ivoire’s AS Tanda, Ghana’s Wa All Stars Football Club, and Senegal’s US Goree.
The three-time Liberian league champions failed to win a single game as they missed out on winning an accolade in the west African state. They kicked off the competition against host team US Goree and lost 5-4 on penalties. After missing several clear chances during the 90 minutes of play, it was from the penalty spot that BYC’s hopes of reaching the final came to an end.
However, they were given the chance to win the third place prize money in a match against a Wa All Stars team that was defeated by Ivorian side AS Tanda.
The match against the Ghanaian side ended with another disappointment as BYC bowed to a 2-1 defeat.
The Ghanaian side took a first-half lead but BYC leveled the score after the break through David Tweh. After leveling the score, Wa All Stars responded with a goal that BYC couldn’t redeem and it eventually became the match winner.
With the Liberia First Division league on break for the first phase, the WAFU competition came on time for BYC, which used the opportunity to test their team against some of Africa’s stronger teams.
BYC will now focus on reaching the group stage of the 2017 CAF Confederation Cup when they host Supersports United on Sunday, April 9 in the first leg of the playoffs round.
