MONROVIA, Montserrado – The Antoinette Tubman Stadium will be the center of attraction on Sunday, Feb. 5 when the 2016-17 Liberia Football Association First Division league leaders, FC Fassell, go against two-time Liberia Premier League winner LISCR Football Club.
With both teams yet to lose in the league, the match is considered by local fans as a “Clash of the Titansâ€. However, FC Fassell is considered the favorite leading up to the match. The Soccer Missionaries have had an outstanding performance in the league so far as compared to LISCR FC.
They remain the only team undefeated, having won all six of their matches, including a narrow 2-1 win over league defending champions, Barrack Young Controller. With a game on hand, Fassell leads the league table with 18 points, five more than second and third place BYC and LISCR that have 13 points from seven games each.
Meanwhile, LISCR will be hoping to avoid defeat against the high-flying Fassell to keep their title hopes alive. Like FC Fassell, the Shipping Boys have not lost a match, but lack consistency in winning. LISCR has drawn three of their seven matches.
Despite Fassell winning all of their games, LISCR’s Gambian head coach Mustapha Manneh is confident that his side will avoid defeat. The former Gambian Under-23 head coach praised Fassell for their form but warned them about his undefeated record against top competitors.
“Since I started as head coach, I haven’t lost to my competitors. Fassell is doing very well but I’m not afraid of meeting them,†Manneh told The Bush Chicken.
A win for LISCR would close the gap on Fassell that the title yet.
“I’m not competing with any team. I have a target for the first round of the league with is minimum 20 points and finishing in the top three,†he said.
