MONROVIA, Montserrado – With just three rounds of league games to end the current Liberia Football Association first division league season, the storied Mighty Barrolle continues its fight to escape from the relegation zone.
The Kanyan Pepper Boys moved up in ranking following an impressive 2-0 win over defending champions, Barrack Young Controllers Football Club, on Saturday, July 1.
The match was worth watching as both clubs went to the pitch with something to fight for. For BYC, they were aiming to grab all three points to remain in the chase for the league title, while Mighty Barrolle was aiming for a win to leave the relegation zone and secure its place in the first division.
Despite both teams’ desperation to win, few doubted that BYC would emerge victorious, especially when the strength of their squad was compared to Mighty Barrolle’s. Unfortunately for BYC, they surrendered all three points to Barrolle at the end of the match, following goals from Sam Johnson and Julius Woto.
The victory over the Go Blue Boys lifted Barrolle from tenth to ninth in the 12-team league table with 20 points from 19 games. With 10th place LPRC Oilers losing 1-0 to league leaders FC Fassell on Sunday, Barrolle is comfortably seated above the relegation zone with three points over the Oilers, seven points over 11th-placed ELWA United, and 11 points over bottom club Invincible Eleven.
Not only did the victory over BYC elevate Barrolle, but for the first time this season, they were able to grab two consecutive wins. They recorded a 2-1 win against their traditional rivals, the Invincible Eleven, last weekend before the crucial win over BYC.
Additionally, with Barolle beating BYC 3-2 in the first leg at the Blue Field, the 2-0 win at the Antoinette Tubman Stadium made it their first back to back wins over a club this season.
Barrolle will continue their fight to escape relegation when they face seventh place Jubilee Football Club on Saturday, July 8.
