Hanson Boakai Expresses Willingness to Represent Liberia

The Canadian U23 footballer Hanson Tamba Boakai says he would consider playing for the Lone Star’s senior team if the nation calls him.

In a brief chat with The Bush Chicken, Boakai said he is open to wearing the red, white, and blue depending on how well the football program is being run.

“I have been with Canada and everything is professional. The organization, infrastructure, and systems are in place. But Liberia is my country, and I really love it,” Boakai said.

Failing to rule out the possibility of representing Liberia, Boakai expressed his frustration over Liberia losing young talents to other countries including the son of the legendary George Weah, Timothy Weah, who is representing the United States of America at the U17 level.

“It’s a shame that Liberia has so many talents [who] have decided to represent other countries, including the great Weah’s son,” he said.

The 21-year-old, who recently signed with Romania Liga II club Uta Arad, is eligible to play for Liberia because his parents are Liberians. Under FIFA rules, Boakai is free to switch allegiance because he has not made any appearance for the Canadian senior team in an official competition.

Boakai was born to Liberian parents in Teldou, Guinea during the civil war. He was born October 28, 1996 and moved to Edmonton, Canada with his parents at the age of seven. He began playing football with Edmonton-based academy team Xtreme Football Cub, where he was spotted by North American Soccer League club, FC Edmonton in 2011.
