Over the weekend, South African side, the Mamelodi Sundowns, moved a step closer to reaching the quarterfinals of the CAF Champions League following an emphatic 1-0 win away at St. George of Ethiopia.
The five-times South African ABSA Premiership club secured the narrow win courtesy of a late goal from Liberia’s Anthony Snoti Laffor.
After playing to a goalless draw in the first half, Laffor scored in the 85th minute give the Sundowns a much-needed lead. The 30-year-old attacker received the ball from the right side before shooting into St. George’s net to beat Ugandan goalkeeper, Robert Odongokara. His late goal would later be the match only goal as it seperated both teams after the sound of the final whistle.
Not only did his performance on the pitch and his goal scored help the Sundowns secure the crucial victory, but it has put him among the top performers in the competition over the week. He, along with the Sundowns’ goalkeeper Dennis Oyango, were the representatives in the Best Eleven of the Week.
It was Laffor’s second appearance among the CAF Champions League’s Best Eleven since the start of the 2017 campaign. His first appearance came after the second match day, following the Sundowns’ 3-1 win away at Congolese club AS Vita.
The former SuperSports United forward registered his name on the score sheet once and provided an assist to help the Sundowns grab their first three points of the 2017 CAF Champions League campaign.
The Liberian winger will go in search of another brilliant performance over the weekend when his Mamelodi Sundowns take on AS Vita Club at the Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium in the final round of group matches.
A draw or defeat for Tunisian selde Esperance Tunis and win for the South African club will see them finish at the top of Group C with 11 points.
