MONROVIA, Montserrado – On November 29, the football world was shocked after a plane crashed while carrying 86 passengers, including team members of the Brazilian football club Associação Chapecoense de Futebol.
There were only five survivors from the crash. The Brazilian club was traveling to Colombia to honor the first of the two games of the Copa Sudamericana Final.
Since the incident, football clubs and fans from around the world have paid tribute to the fallen footballers. Now, the Liberia Football Association has joined the rest of the world to pay its tribute.
On the opening day of the 2016-17 season, the Liberia Football Association’s communication director, Horatio Bobby Willie, called on fans to stand and observe a moment of silence before the Super Cup kicked off between Monrovia Club Breweries and Barrack Young Controller.
Meanwhile, the LFA first division LISCR Football Club was one of the several clubs from Africa and the rest of the world that paid tribute to the fallen heroes. The two-time Liberia Premier League winners used their Facebook page to send out their condolences.
The message read, “Indeed, it is a sad moment in the football world. Losing numbers that has (sic) been contributing to the game is hurtful. Our condolences to the families of those involve.â€
