PAYNESVILLE, Montserrado – The Liberia Football Association is expected to announce a final decision on the 2020 football season today, May 4, after several consultations with stakeholders.
Upon receiving communication from the Confederation of African Football on plans for the ongoing season, the LFA had separate meetings with the first division, second division, and women’s football clubs.
A source closed to the football house disclosed that a decision to cancel the league was proposed by the LFA, with several clubs welcoming the decision. The rumored decision was to cancel the season without relegating or promotion any clubs, except for the women’s lower division, which was almost at its end. However, clubs are reportedly requesting that the cash prizes for the champions be equally distributed among them.
If the LFA follows through and cancels the 2020 season, it’ll join fellow African countries such as Kenya, Guinea, and Angola. The Kenyan Football Federation canceled its season and announced league leaders Gor Mahia as champions with 11 games left to play. Angola and Guinea canceled their respective seasons without recognizing any champion or relegating and promoting any club. All results were nullified.
