Liberty Party Unfazed by Edith Gongloe Weh’s Support to Boakai

MONROVIA, Montserrado – The elections continue to witness more drama with staunch supporters of political parties crossing carpet while others are maintaining their membership and pledging support to the political party.

Edith Gongloe Weh, former superintendent of vote-rich Nimba is the newest on the block to pledge her support to the presidential bid of Joseph Nyumah Boakai, the standard bearer of the Unity Party.

Speaking on ELBC Radio on Monday via mobile phone from the United States, Weh said she believes that Boakai is best suited to keep the country on the right track if elected as the next president.

The former Nimba superintendent said despite her decision to support Boakai, she remains a registered member of the Liberty Party, adding that she has not withdrawn her membership from the party.

Weh expressed the hope that Liberty Party would not have any problems with her decision to support Boakai.

She indicated that it is important to clearly state her position on the current political situation in Liberia regarding the elections because according to her, Liberia is facing a major moment of trial.

“The decision Liberians are about to make on October 10 will determine the country’s future,” she said.

Weh contested the 2014 special senatorial election in Nimba and came second.

When contacted, Kla Edward Toomey, Liberty Party’s deputy secretary general, told The Bush Chicken that the party respects Weh’s decision to support Boakai, but said “it is regrettable that Weh is not supporting Charles Walker Brumskine at this critical juncture.”

Toomey explained that the party’s executive committee would convene a meeting shortly to look into Weh’s decision.

He said Liberty Party expects its partisans to support Brumskine in the October 10 presidential election but noted when something happens, on the contrary, the party does not have control over its members’ personal decisions.

“No political party will be excited for one of its strong members to endorse the presidential bid of its rival standard-bearer,” he said, but he maintained that Liberty Party’s “support base in Nimba is intact and the party is not troubled about Weh’s decision.”
