MONROVIA, Montserrado – The head coach of the senior national team of Liberia, Thomas Kojo, has released his final list of players for Lone Star’s crucial African Cup of Nations Qualifiers against Zimbabwe on Sunday, November 18 at the Antoinette Tubman Stadium.
Through the official Facebook page of Liberia Football Association, a list of 20 players was released without high profile striker Sam Johnson, who plays in the top tier of Norwegian football for Valerenga IF.
According to the release from the football house, the powerhouse striker who has scored 12 goals in 27 games for Valerenga across all competition this season will miss the match against Zimbabwe due to a knee injury.
Meanwhile, midfielder Mohammed Sangare of English Premiership club Newcastle United U-23, who was not named in the provisional 25-man squad, is expected to land in the country to make his debut for the Lone Star.
Sangare joins the list of foreign-based players that includes the Mamelodi Sundowns’ Anthony Laffor, William Jebor of Wydad Casablanca, Boison Wynney of Mallorca B, Joel Johnson of Charlotte Independence, Kpah Sherman, Murphy Oscar Dorley of Slovan Liberec, Spartak Moscow’s Sylvanus Nimely and Turkey-based Tonia Tisdell.
The final list of 20 players includes 11 home-based players that are dominated by first division and FA Cup champions, Barrack Young Controllers with five players, followed by LISCR FC with four players. Third on the list of invited home-based players is LPRC Oilers with two players.
LISCR FC’s 18-year-old goalkeeper Ashley Williams gets his third senior national team call-up. Williams is joined by Allen Njie, Sam Kollie, and Kemoh Kamara of LISCR FC; Alpha Jalloh, Eugene Swen, Teah Dennis, David Tweh, Fallah Sheriff of Barrack Young Controllers; and LPRC Oilers’ Aloysius Simujla and Alvin Maccornel.
After three matches without a win, the Lone Star will be looking for their first win against Zimbabwe as they look forward to keeping their hopes alive for the Cameroon 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.
