Sekou Konneh Resigns as BYC President as Nathaniel Sherman Takes Over

MONROVIA, Montserrado – The vice president for administration of the Liberia Football Association has resigned as the president of Liberia first division club, Barrack Young Controllers.

Although the statute of the Liberia Football Association does not prevent him from presiding over the club while serving as vice president, Konneh said he believes it is time for the club to have a new leadership.

“Following a meeting with the board and executive committee of BYC Football Club that has been my life for all these years, I decided to step aside as president of BYC,” he told reporters. “The reason behind this is that I am assuming a bigger role at the Liberia Football Association, which I think is for the good of all Liberian players and club and not just for BYC Football Club. In as much as it my right – there is no statutory provision that deprives me of remaining president of the club – I decided to willingly step aside as the way of grooming new leadership of the club.”

Immediately after announcing his resignation, the former Lone Star goalkeeper who also played for Barrack Young Controller, Nathaniel Sherman, was announced as the new president of the club.

Meanwhile, Konneh has vowed to offer assistance to young potential leaders who might want to succeed in being football administrators: “Irrespective of what happens at the FA, it is important that I assume a bigger national role in helping our young people around and helping other new people who are involved into clubs by sharing with them my experiences on how I did it to reach this level.”

Speaking on his new role as president of the club, Sherman told the media that he’s delighted to be the new president of the club.

“I know I am replacing a great personality and to do so, I will work to keep us at the top of Liberian football,” he said. “My experience as a player and president of Barrack Young Controller II is what I am bringing to the club. With the collective effort of everyone at BYC, we can keep the club up.”

Konneh has been the president of Barrack Young Controller Football Club since 1997. Under his leadership, the club has grown to be one of Liberia’s most successful clubs. As president, the club won the top tier of Liberian football three times and the Liberian FA Cup twice.
