MONROVIA, Montserrado – The office of Speaker Bhofal Chambers has accused the media of misinterpreting the context of the comments made by him during a press conference held last week at his capitol building office.

A release issued by the speaker’s political officer, George Watkins, said the “misinformation” in the local media on the speaker’s statement against submitting to independent investigators is untrue.

Watkins said the speaker’s statement to journalists had been taken out of context. He clarified that instead of what has been reported in the media, the House of Representatives will cooperate with the independent investigators if any interest arises.

However, he said such will be done only on the path of collaboration and not by forcing the House to submit to any institution.

During Chambers’ controversial press conference, he told reporters, “This body can never be invited by any institution. You can come and make a request and this body will determine what approach to take.”

Watkins now says the speaker has assured that the House of Representatives will be willing to brief the investigators on account of information they have gathered, so far, on the allegedly missing billions in banknotes.

The Liberian constitution protects lawmakers from being arrested or tried “as a result of opinions expressed or votes cast in the exercise of the functions of [their] office.”
