The days of Liberians playing in Europe’s top leagues are long gone, and the reality is that Liberians football fans will have to wait a bit longer to see their compatriots play in some of Europe’s top league.
This comes as Liberians who were expected to make the top leagues are surprisingly moving down to some of the world’s lower-ranked leagues.
Recently, Sam Johnson turned down offers from some of Europe’s top clubs to join Chinese second tier club, Wuhan Zall, on a three-year deal.
He has now been followed by the national team’s top striker, William Jebor, who has left Portugal’s Rio Ave, to join Wydad Casablanca in Morocco on a one-year loan.
Jebor, who was the leading scorer in the Egyptian Premier League with 10 goals from ten games, had moved to Rio Ave from El Geish on a free transfer during the 2014 summer transfer.
The striker failed to make an impact at Rio Ave, playing 14 league games with no goal. His only goal for Rio was a Portuguese league cup game against Sporting Braga. He failed to land on the first team and was loaned to Spanish Second tier club, SD Ponferradina, before the start of the 2015-2016 season.
Just like his days with Rio Ave, Jebor struggled to enter Ponferradina’s first eleven.
The 24-year-old had to wait until his eleventh match with Ponferradina before scoring his first goal for the club, which came against Spanish La Liga side Eibar in the Spanish Cup match. He scored his only league goal for Ponferradina in a 2-1 home win over Huscea.
After a poor league performance, Ponferradina was relegated to the third tier of Spanish football. Jebor will once more be loaned.
The Liberian striker’s first appearance could be Wydad’s CAF Champions league fixture at home against Ivorian league champions, ASEC Mimosas on Sunday, August 14.
