BAHN, Nimba – Amid a delay in the Senate confirming Pres. George Weah’s nominee for the post of mayor of Bahn, the Nimba County Legislative Caucus, through Rep. Roger Domah, has asked that the “highest and next in line civil servant,†Africano Kwamie, act as mayor of the city until a mayor is confirmed.
The incumbent mayor, Angie Dopoe, was re-nominated to the post but she has not yet been confirmed by the Senate. No official information has been released about why Dopoe’s confirmation has been delayed, but mayors of other Nimba cities, including Karnplay and Tappita, have been confirmed, although they have yet to be inducted.
Domah, who represents the seventh district in which Bahn is located, took the decision because he had received news that Dopoe was acting as mayor even when she had not yet been confirmed. He said the decision to have the administrative assistant take over is in line with the president’s mandate.
“I said that the administrative assistant should be acting while the situation of the city mayor can be resolved,†Domah said. “[It’s] the same way we expect the commissioners [who were not re-nominated] to observe the order of the president and allow their clerks to be acting.â€
When Weah took over leadership of the country, he mandated that heads of government agencies and ministries relinquish their posts and allow the human resource directors to take charge, in the absence of new appointments.
Domah said, as per his oversight responsibility, he had directed the administrative assistant to take charge. He added that Sen. Prince Y. Johnson, who heads the county’s legislative caucus, would also ensure that the order was enforced.
“Sen. Johnson told me that he has called on the county inspector to go on the radio and call on the administrative assistant to take over the city until the leadership situation can be resolved,†Domah added. “As we speak, there where we are now. We expect the county inspector to call and restore calm in the city by instructing the administrative assistant to act while we wait for the confirmation of the city mayor.â€
