PAYNESVILLE, Montserrado – It was another disappointing match day for Gambia and Senegal, who both failed to score a single goal in a 90-minute stretch of their match in the West African Football Union U-20 Nations Cup.
The Gambia drew their first match against Guinea while Senegal lost 3-1 to Mali in their first group game. They both came to the pitch with the hopes of earning a win, to stand a chance of qualifying along with Mali from Group B.
However, it was another disappointment for the two teams and especially Senegal, which had lost their opening game. Both teams must now win in their final group game if they are to go through to the semifinals.
The last day of group matches will be an uphill task for the Gambia, which will face Mali, one of the favorites to win the tournament. However, with Mali already qualifying, they might play their final game without the same serious approach from their previous two games. The Gambia, still looking for a chance to qualify, can capitalize on that and pull out a win to qualify with five points.
While the Gambia will be battling out Mali to book a place in the semifinals, Senegal and Guinea, with one point each, will play against each other for a maximum three points to stand a chance of qualifying. A defeat for the Gambia against Mali will qualify the winner from Guinea and Senegal match. Also, a draw between Senegal and Guinea will help the Gambia qualify to the semifinals if they will maintain their previous two results and play to a draw against Mali.
