MONROVIA, Montserrado – Playing time is not coming easily for William Jebor, the Liberian striker in the Segunda División for SD Ponferridina.
Jebor seems further down the pecking order, with the Ponferridina’s head coach, Tomás Nistal GarcÃa considering him the fifth-choice striker behind, Montenegrin Luka ÄorÄ‘ević, Brazilian Yuri de Souza Fonseca and lastly the Spanish duo Jesús Berrocal Camposa and Pablo Infante Muñoz.
Jebor has managed to make ten league appearances, two starts and eight as a substitute for the clubs 24 league matches this season. The Liberian has covered 240 minutes out of the 2,160 of the league matches, an amount which is not conducive for any footballer who wants to make the top.
His only goal for Ponferridina was against Spanish La Liga side SD Eibar, in the fourth round of the Copa del Rey back in Dec. 2015.
Jebor moved to Ponferridina on loan from Portugal’s Primeira Liga club Rio Ave in the summer of 2015 with an option of buying at the close of the 2015-2016 league season.
At Rio Ave, Jebor made 14 appearances with no goal for the club and two Europa League appearances.
Before arriving at Rio Ave, Jebor played in Liberia, Syria, Libya and Egypt, where he became the 2012-2013 Egyptian premier league-leading goal scorer, with ten goals from 13 games before the start of the Arab Spring that pushed Egypt into chaos.
Despite his lack of playing time with Ponferridina, Jebor has been a star on the Liberia National Football Team under the guidance of head coach, James Debbah. From six matches, he has scored five times, including a hat-trick away at Equatorial-Guinea in the 2018 FIFA world cup qualifying campaign.
