GANTA, Nimba – Supporters of the Coalition for Democratic Change on December 24, 2017 concluded their campaign activities in Ganta with a ‘Victory Candle Night,’ ahead of the December 26 runoff election.
Supporters carried candles in their hands as they marched through the main streets of Ganta for more than three hours. Many supporters had personally purchased their own candles and other items to be a part of the march. The activity came just before the National Elections Commission’s deadline to end all campaign activities by midnight of December 24.
“The candle night was our own national strategy of closing our campaign as per the National Elections Commission mandate,†said Sam G. Ta-Krah, the chair of CDC’s Nimba youth wing. “The candle night symbolizes the victory we will be taking on December 26, and a symbol of lighting the country under the George Manneh Weah-led government.â€
The CDC event was observed a day after the standard bearer of the Unity Party, Vice President Joseph N. Boakai, closed the party’s campaign activities in Ganta. On Saturday, December 23, thousands of supporters of the ruling Unity Party were on the streets of Ganta to mark the closure of the party’s campaign Nimba.
Unity Party took second place to Prince Johnson in Nimba during the first round of elections. Johnson, of the Movement for Democracy and Reconstruction, has now pledged his support for CDC.
