MONROVIA, Montserrado – New mothers at the ELWA and Redemption Hospitals were recipients of cash donations from Glamorous Girls, a group of Liberian women residing in the United States during the holiday season.
The mothers had all recently given birth and were each presented a purse of at least L$600 (US$3.80) as a gift for the Christmas and New Year celebrations.
An official of the group, Rachel Quiah, disclosed during the presentation at the ELWA maternal ward that they were a group of Liberian women residing in the U.S. who were concerned about the welfare of women and their contribution in society.
Quiah said while in Liberia on their annual vacation, five members of the organization decided to visit the two major hospitals and provide gifts to the new baby mothers and their children.
The mother of a one-day-old baby at the ELWA Hospital who received L$1,000 (US$6.3), Kumbah Chieyoe praised the Glamorous Girls organization for the gesture. She said the gift was a sign of fortune for her young child.
“I didn’t expect it. I see that my child came with the gift of prosperity. It shows that my son is a lucky child,†she said.
She also promised to remember the organization for the goodwill shown to her and her baby.
One the head midwives at ELWA Obstetrics department, Martha Bryant, also welcomed the gesture of the women’s group.
According to Bryant, all the mothers who had babies received the gift. It was not clear how many women in total benefitted from the donation.
