South African-based Anthony Snoti Laffor continued his fine form in the 2018-19 season by helping his Mamelodi Sundowns reach the top of the ABSA Premiership table after a narrow 3-2 win over the Cape Town City Football Club.
After failing to win their two previous games which could have taken them at the top of the league table, the Sundowns needed to win the game against Cape Town to put their fight for the title back on path.
The Brazilians showed their strength as the league’s defending champions by taking the lead in the 22nd minute when Lebohang Maboe’s goal became the difference between the two sides in the first half. Cape Town returned from the break with the equalizer just two minutes into the second half, from the penalty spot through 23-year-old South African midfielder, Riyaad Norodiaen.
Thirteen minutes after getting the score leveled, Cape Town saw themselves going behind again after Anthony Laffor restored the Sundowns’ lead. Laffor scored with a shot from 40 meters to beat Dutch goalkeeper Peter Leeuwenburgh, who was in goal for Cape Town City.
Phakamani Mahlambbi doubled the Sundowns’ lead in the 83rd minute but Cape Town City reduced the goal deficit in the stoppage time through Kermit Erasmus.
The three points collected against Cape Town took the Sundowns to the top of the ABSA Premiership table with 39 points from 20 games. The Brazilians are one point above Bidvest Wits, who have played 21 games.
Laffor’s goal against Cape Town City was his fourth of the 2018-19 season from 14 appearances in all competition. The former Liberian skipper has scored twice each in the CAF Champions League and the ABSA Premiership.
