MONROVIA, Montserrado – The Group stage of the 2015/2016 National County Sports Meet has ended at four venues across the country.
Several underrated counties who were ignored in the favourites discussion held their own against the more-fancied opposition and entered the quarter-finals stage.
Gbarpolu, Lofa, and Maryland shocked many observers of the sports meet.
Southeastern side Maryland managed to finish second behind Nimba in Group II, to edge out one of the tournament’s favorites, Grand Cape Mount and Bomi.
Also, Gbarpolu made the most surprising qualification of the group stage. Despite a 1-0 loss in their final group match, Gbarpolu qualified over Margibi County. A 1-0 win over Monsterrado in their first game was enough to see Gbarpolu go through to the quarter-finals.
The teams that qualified are Grand Bassa, Bong, Nimba, Maryland, Grand Gedeh, Lofa, Montserrado and Gbarpolu Counties qualified.
Below is the full fixture of the football.
The quarter-finals will kick off on Jan. 3, at the Antoinette Tubman Stadium in Monrovia.
