Liberia’s Anthony Snoti Laffor has reached another milestone as his South African club, the Mamelodi Sundowns, won their second continental trophy over the weekend after defeating Congolese club TP Mazembe in the 2017 CAF Super Cup.
With the Sundowns winning the 2016 CAF Champions league and Mazembe winning the 2016 CAF Confederation Cup, both sides met at the Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium in South Africa to compete for the CAF Super Cup. In the end, it was the Sundowns that became victorious after a narrow 1-0 win.
Ricardo Nascimento’s goal from the penalty spot was enough to hand the Brazilians their second continental gold medal in less than a year.
After playing to a goalless draw in the first half, both teams were unable to register a goal until eight minutes to the game’s end when the Sundowns got their golden moment.
In an attempt to clear the ball off the danger zone, Mazembe’s center defender, Petit Onedika, brought down Sundowns’s captain, Hlompho Alpheus Kekana. The center referee pointed to the spot for the foul played within Mazembe’s penalty area.
Newly signed striker Nascimento converted the penalty in the 83rd minute to give the Sundowns the lead on home soil.
There were no additional goals in the remaining minutes as the Sundowns ended the match with a narrow 1-0 score to become the champions of the 2017 CAF Super Cup.
