SENJEH DISTRICT, Bomi – A Bomi man has been pronounced dead after he suffered an attack by three duikers.
Charles Hilton, who lives on the Sime Darby plantation, was transported to the John F. Kennedy Memorial Medical Center, where medical staff said he died as a result of severe blood loss on Wednesday morning.
Last Friday, Hilton experienced a freak accident when three duikers, commonly known in Liberia as red deer, attacked him between Vargbay and Gandima Camp while he and his partner were on their way from the farm.
Gaylo Snowe, Hilton’s partner, explained to The Bush Chicken that the three duikers came out from the bush, with one running directly at Hilton to attack him.
“I was at the front and we were like 6 to 7 feet far from each other when the deer jump on my boyfriend and he tried to hit it hard so that it could go away, but the deer did not do it,†she said, later suggesting that the deer were possessed.
The animals continued to attack Hilton in his stomach, Snowe said, triggering excessive bleeding. She later shouted for help, but before people could arrive on the scene, the duikers had left.
“The deer never wanted to even leave until I started shouting and people started coming before they decided to go back in the bush,†Snowe added.
Hilton was then rushed to a clinic in Gbah Jakeh community, she added, where he underwent treatment. However, as his condition worsened, he was transferred the next day to JFK in Monrovia, where he remained and died on Wednesday morning.
Hilton was a 2011/2012 graduate of the Sime Darby Plantation High School. He was a contractor on the farm of the Gbarpolu’s Sen. Armah Jallah and had come to Gandima to visit his family.
