MONROVIA, Montserrado – The Liberian First Division defending champions, Barrack Young Controllers, have departed Liberia for Senegal, where they are to participate in the 2017 West African Football Union club tournament.
The Go Blue Boys arrived in Dakar, Senegal on Wednesday, March 29 and will be joined by Ghanaian club Wa-All Star Football Club, AS Tanda of Cote d’ Ivoire, and US Gorée of host Senegal in a tournament that will run from March 30 to April 2.
The WAFU Club Championship was scheduled for December 2016 but wasn’t played as planned due to conflicts with a religious festival in Senegal.
According to a release from BYC, WAFU is responsible for the transportation and hotel accommodations for all participating teams. The tournament is being organized to celebrate the WAFU Zone’s US$25 million long-term sponsorship agreement with FOX News Networks Group.
BYC is expected to use their participation in the championship to prepare for their CAF Confederation Cup playoff qualifier against South African ABSA Premiership giant Supersports United on April 9 at the Antoinette Tubman Stadium.
