GANTA, Nimba – Several residents of Ganta and the surrounding areas have expressed their concerns about the size of culverts that the Chinese international Construction Company is using to install a drainage system.
The residents noted that the culverts are very tiny and therefore could be easily blocked by debris. They also felt that the culverts were planted at too deep a depth – at two feet – to be easily accessible to cleaning crews.
Resident engineer of the Ministry of Public Works in Nimba, Laihaison Warity, told reporters in Ganta that he is not aware of the road work plan used by CHICO and therefore could not comment on the culverts.
“I have never seen the work plan of CHICO to date and as such, I don’t know how they are going about with this road project. I cannot say anything to what I do not know about,†Warity said.
The Gbarnga to Ganta-Guinea Border road project, initiated three years ago, is financed by the European Union. It is expected to be completed at the end of July 2015.
Meanwhile, Nimba County Assistant Superintendent for Development, D. Dorr Cooper, and Ganta City Mayor, Benjamin S. Dogbah, Sr. have both called on property owners along the main street to erect modern structures to give the street a decent look.
Dogbah said, “We can’t call Ganta a city and have buildings erected along the main street that do not represent a city.â€
He advised anyone constructing buildings to adhere to the zoning laws of Liberia and consult the Chief Resident Engineer of the county in case of any confusion.
“Failure on the part of anyone who will not follow these regulations, serious action will be taken against you,†Dogbah said.
