Just less than a week after the Mamelodi Sundowns reached the final of the MTN-8 Cup final, they made a big turnaround in Africa’s biggest club competition, the CAF Champions League, by beating Zambia’s Zesco 2-0 to book a place in the finals.
Goals from Liberia’s own Anthony Snoti Laffor and South African Percy Tau in each half were enough to help the Sundowns overturn a 2-1 loss in the first leg away at Zambia.
Laffor, who came on as a substitute to score the only goal against Chippa United to help Sundowns reach the final of the MTN-8 competition, was given the chance in the first eleven against Zesco. He did not disappoint, as he scored in the fifth minute to give the Sundowns an early lead.
Tau doubled the Sundowns’ lead in the second half, and prevented Zesco from scoring, as they ended the match with a 2-0 victory.
The Sundowns advanced to the final on a 3-2 aggregate and will play Egyptian side Zamalek in the final. Â Laffor and his team will host the first leg between 14 of October and the return leg in Egypt a week later.
They may have achieved their goal of reaching the finals of the CAF Champions League, but Laffor feels there is still a bigger task ahead.
“First of all, I would like to thank the fans and the wonderful people that came out to support us,†he said. “It is not over yet; we still need to play and win in the final.â€
Meanwhile, former Ponferradina striker, William Jebor, will not play in the CAF Champions League finals this year despite his Wydad Athletics’ 5-2 victory over Zamalek SC.
Jebor, who made his second appearance in the competition, scored twice to help Wydad to a 3-1 lead at half time.
Wydad was unable to reach the finals as a result of their prior 4-0 defeat away at Zamalek in the first leg. Wydad crashed out of the competition on a 6-5 aggregate loss.
